Islamic Political Directives

This course offers an in-depth study of the Islamic principles governing political authority, obedience, and governance in light of the Qur’an and Sunnah. Beginning with the foundational verse of Surah An-Nisa (4:59), students will explore the concept of the fountainhead of authority in Islam—Allah and His Messenger (sws)—and understand how this eternal authority shapes the structure and limits of political power in an Islamic state.

Through classical texts and Prophetic traditions, the course examines the responsibilities of rulers and citizens, the obligation of obedience to lawful authority, and the conditions under which disagreement or refusal is permitted. Special emphasis is placed on the role of the Qur’an and Sunnah as the ultimate reference in all disputes, ensuring that no law or directive can override divine guidance.

Students will also study the Prophetic instructions regarding political stability, the importance of collective unity (al-Jama‘ah), law-abiding citizenship, and the prohibition of rebellion except under clearly defined and exceptional circumstances. The course addresses sensitive issues such as unjust rulers, political chaos, and armed uprising, clarifying the ethical and legal boundaries set by Shari‘ah to prevent anarchy and bloodshed.

By the end of this course, learners will have a clear understanding of:
